Description:
The course presents the basic problems of solid waste management from
the viewpoint of sustainability and taking into account (with a
critical view) the existing legislation and its trends. Emphasis is
given to understanding of factors affecting possible choices.
Specifically, the following issues are discussed: 1) Production of
solid waste (quantities, composition, physico-chemical and biological
characteristics). Factors affecting production and possibilities to
control these factors. Methods to predict quantities and
characteristics. 2) The concept of sustainability and systemic approach
for management. Life cycle cost of management systems. Sustainability
indicators: social, environmental, economic. 3) Economic dimension of
management systems. Expeditures and sources of revenue. The importance
of the viewpoint of the analysis. The importance of government
subsidies. 4) The mechanisms of offering the related services. The
feasibility and the advantages and disadvantages of privatization in
offering the services. The concept of equity δικαιοκατανομής and
productivity in offering the services.
